Missing Tile

One tile is missing. Spot the pattern and find the tile that fits the gap.

🤔 How to play

  1. Nine tiles sit in a grid on a wooden table, three across and three down, but the bottom-right one is missing. That empty space is the gap. The answer tiles wait in a tray in front.
  2. A row goes across. A column goes down. Look at what changes along each row and down each column: the shape, the colour, how many shapes there are, or how big they are.
  3. Work out what the missing tile must look like, then find it in the tray. Only one tile fits the gap.
  4. The first puzzles have one rule. Later ones have two, then three. Every puzzle was checked by computer, so there is always exactly one right tile.

Controls

A wrong tile greys out and explains itself ("Look at the colour: each row has its own colour"), so every miss teaches the rule, and the right tile settles into the gap while your helper cheers. Nothing is saved: ticks and stars for finished levels last only this visit.

What it practises

Matrix reasoning: spotting what changes along the rows and down the columns, then finding the tile that fits. It is the shape of puzzle used in non-verbal reasoning papers, but this is practice, not a test: nothing is scored and nothing is saved.
