Chart Detective

Pick a case

🤔 How to play

  1. Pick a case. Tally Time and Picture It are for ages 5 and up; Key of Two, Bar Charts and Tables are for 7 and up.
  2. Count what arrives. In the first two cases things come one at a time. Tap the row or column where each one goes and watch the chart grow.
  3. Answer the detective. Which was most? How many more? Tap a column on the chart, or tap a number.
  4. Case closed. Every finding is read back, then it's on to the next case, or the next stage when every answer was right first time.

A wrong answer gets a hint and another go. A second wrong answer gets the worked answer, with the two columns lit up, before the case moves on. On a keyboard, the number keys 1 to 5 pick a column, Tab and Enter press any button. The voice is your device's own; nothing is sent anywhere, and nothing is saved.

What it practises

Reading and making charts, as taught from Year 1 to Year 4: tally marks in fives, pictograms and block diagrams, then pictograms with a key, bar charts with axis steps of 2, 5 and 10, and two-way tables. The questions are the ones the school asks: which is most or least, how many more or fewer, how many altogether, and true or false.
